What's Next

After a little over two weeks of [free!] residency right smack in the heart of Santa Fe's not-even-remotely-inexpensive historic district, I've been beginning to feel the slight itch to move on...but then unexpectedly, Randy the Mobile Codger rolled into town the other day. Not surprisingly, at least to those who follow the man's musings, the Codger's presence has breathed new life into the Santa Fe experience, so I'll be sticking around a little longer. That, and I just placed an order for some new reeds today, so I have to wait for them to arrive before going anywhere.

My typical evening busking routine continues to yield results (both musical and monetary), so I'm good with staying put a little longer for that as well. I have set myself the goal of bringing in enough money to cover the gas expenses for a rather long upcoming trip I have planned in a couple of weeks, and am on pace to do so in just a few more days.

What's this upcoming trip, you ask? Well, sometime around the beginning of July, I'll be saddling up and making my way directly to....St. Augustine, Florida. Because, hey, that's the place to be in July, right?

Right?

But seriously, the purpose of putting myself in the Sunshine State precisely at the time of year when no self-respecting full-timer would be caught dead less than 1000 miles away is for a call that I'm grateful to have such freedom to answer. It's been pretty well documented here that a chief benefit to living on wheels is having the ability to be wherever I want to be and for as long as the situation warrants, but a new twist on this that never really occurred to me until recently is having the freedom to be around when those one loves the most are in need.

Without going into more detail than necessary, dear Mom, who you may recall heroically swooped in to the rescue a few months ago while my appendix was kicking the absolute snot out of me, is going through a serious health setback of her own right now, and because having someone around for July and August will be a big help, I'm going to exploit my freedom-to-be-anywhere in a new sort of way and, well, be there.

I confess that I've been wrestling a bit with how to divulge these plans here, as I don't want to come off even remotely sounding like I expect accolades for choosing to help take care of Mom. I mean, it's Mom for crying out loud -- how could anyone living this carefree wheeled existence not happily rise to such an occasion?

In the meantime, I figure I might as well bide my time here at elevation in the Land of Enchantment, since pretty much anywhere east of here is going to be just plain hot right now. And if I do end up leaving Santa Fe prior to making the long beeline to St. Augustine, it won't be terribly far from here. Maybe just a little higher up to some cooler temperatures.

For now though, The Codger is in the house, and an amateur philosopher like myself can't resist the opportunity to soak up all that the man himself has to say.

  1. I feel a little faint just thinking about Florida is the summer, but good for you

  2. I'm going to assume you won't be staying in the RV while you're there? It's probably as hot there as it is here right now and the temp gauge in the car frequently reads over 100 these days ... would make living in an RV without A/C, well, deadly!

Here's to a speedy recovery for Mom and the freedom to go where you need to go when you need to go there!

  3. Glenn, I heard about your blog from cheaprvliving. So i started reading, (from the very beginning), and it has been better than a book. I have enjoyed your travels, and tribulations, (even considered the grass fed goodness diet). seriously. In Tallahassee, Fl. it was 104 yesterday. so you and Emily keep cool, and best of luck. i will continue to follow your Journey. Hank, from Fl.

  4. Of course you'll go to Florida in July. It's your Mom! St Augustine has some wonderful camping but I haven't tried it in July. I hope you do OK there. Although I suspect you'll just stay wherever Mom is.

  5. Yep, hot in these parts (102° in Lake City yesterday), but St. Augustine is lovely, and it's your mom. Spritz yourself down a lot, go for all the swims you can manage, make lots of sun tea.

  6. The ability to be where you need be is a definite advantage of fulltiming. We've been able to do that more than once over our many years of fulltiming. Hope all goes well with your Mom and you too.

Your stay in Sante Fe has me a little curious. We dry camp and boondock a lot but we've never had the nerve to stay right in a city parking lot for weeks. Did anyone say anything about it to you? Did anyone even notice that you were sleeping there? Your RV isn't very sealth.;)

  7. Karen & Tony -- No problems yet after more than 2 weeks in the same city lot. And after almost two years of doing this, I am firmly of the belief that stealth is highly overrated and unnecessary, assuming your rig is small enough to fit in a normal parking spot.

    Hank -- Welcome!

Shelley -- We'll see, but I expect that the temperatures will require me to move into the [non-wheeled] house for the duration of my stay.

  8. Wow. I just finished reading your blog from day one. I don't remember what link I followed, but I am SO glad I landed here! My husband and I have always taken "roaming vacations"-- never having an Itenerary. We actually have a spinner dial in the glovebox to decide which direction to go when we come to an intersection! We've just started the long process of getting rid of STUFF, and can't wait to be on the road full time. I've enjoyed reading your blog and look forward to reading more!

  9. On your way to Florida stop in New Orleans for a while. I haven't lived there since just after Hurricane Katrina. I'd like to read a few reports about the place.

  10. Lisa -- Congrats on going the distance, and welcome!

Michael -- Not gonna happen. I'll be making a beeline to Florida once I get rolling (i.e. nothing but short overnight stops to sleep).

  11. Glen, you said above that lack of stealth is basically not the problem we all assumed it was as long as one could park in a single parking space. I am considering two vehicles: a Sportsmobile and Tiger (made by Provan in South Carolina). The Tiger has much to recommend it: 19' long, on a truck chassis and thus easier to service & etc. but it is taller and basically has No Stealth. What are your thoughts about these two rigs? I look forward to hearing from you. Mike Sprinkle in Winston-Salem, NC. mikesprinkle@yahoo.com

  12. Mike -- In terms of ability to park overnight in a given spot, I don't think there'd be any difference between a Sportsmobile and a Tiger. Both are small enough to park legally pretty much anywhere, so with a little common sense, I doubt you'd have any problems.
